Mama Kuku Empowerment Project
Women Turning Poultry into Power & Prosperity
What is Mama Kuku?
Mama Kuku is a women-led poultry business model created by The Good Ground Initiative (GGI) to give rural women in Namayingo District, Busia, Tororo, Wakiso (Kawanda) real economic independence, better nutrition, and stronger community roles.
How it works
- Groups of 10 women form a “Mama Kuku cluster”
- Each group receives startup support: 500 broiler chicks, basic housing materials, feed, vaccines, and hands-on training in biosecurity, feeding, and marketing
- Birds grow to market weight in 5–6 weeks
- Average sale price: UGX 13,000–15,000 per bird → total revenue ~UGX 6.5–7.5 million per cycle
- After costs: net profit ~UGX 3 million per group (every 5–6 weeks)
- Profit split:
- 50% reinvested into next cycle
- 30% shared equally among the 10 women
- 20% saved for emergencies or group growth
Why poultry?
- Low startup land requirement — can be done in small backyards
- Fast 5-week cycle → quick cash flow for families
- High local demand for chicken meat & eggs
- Builds on women’s existing knowledge while adding modern techniques
- Improves household nutrition (more protein for children)
Impact so far & plans
- Pilot groups already running in Namayingo
- 17 Congolese refugee women integrated into early clusters in
- Each woman earns UGX 300,000–500,000 per cycle (life-changing income)
- Goal: Scale to 10+ groups in 2026 → 100+ women empowered directly
- Future: Add value-chain steps (egg production, feed making, local markets)
