Mushroom Farming Project
Turning Waste into Wealth, Nutrition & Opportunity Empowering Women & Youth Through Smart Mushroom Production
What is Mama Shamba Mushroom?
Mama Shamba Mushroom is a high-impact, low-investment farming initiative by The Good Ground Initiative. It equips women and youth groups with the skills and resources to grow nutritious mushrooms using agricultural waste, especially poultry manure from our Mama Kuku poultry projects.
This initiative completes our circular farming model creating a sustainable loop where nothing is wasted.
How it Works
- Groups of 8–10 women form a Mushroom Cluster
- Each group receives training, mushroom spawn, growing bags, and simple shade house materials
- They use a mix of poultry manure, maize cobs, banana peels, and other farm waste as substrate
- Mushrooms are ready for harvest in just 4–6 weeks
- After harvesting, the spent substrate is used as rich organic fertilizer back in the Mama Shamba vegetable gardens
Why Mushroom Farming?
- Fast Income: One cycle can generate meaningful income every 5–6 weeks
- High Nutrition: Mushrooms are rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals — helping fight malnutrition in rural households
- Low Space Requirement: Can be grown in small backyards or shade houses
- Climate Smart: Requires less water than traditional vegetables and grows well even in challenging weather
- Circular Economy: Perfectly integrates with Mama Kuku (poultry) and Mama Shamba (gardening)
- Women Friendly: Flexible and manageable alongside household responsibilities
Key Benefits
- Additional income stream for ultra-poor women and youth
- Improved household nutrition and food security
- Reduction in farm waste and better soil health
- Skills development in agribusiness and entrepreneurship
- Creates year-round production even during dry seasons
Impact & Plans
- Pilot clusters already running in Namayingo District with promising early results
- Women are earning extra income while improving family diets
- Spent mushroom substrate is significantly boosting vegetable yields in Mama Shamba gardens
- 2026 Goal: Scale to 15+ mushroom clusters, directly empowering over 150 women and youth
- Future plans: Value addition (drying, powder, and packaging), market linkages, and mushroom seed production
A Powerful Integrated Model
Mama Shamba Mushroom works hand-in-hand with Mama Kuku and Mama Shamba to create a complete, self-sustaining farming ecosystem:
Poultry Manure → Mushroom Substrate → Spent Mushroom Waste → Organic Fertilizer → Better Vegetable Yields
This integrated approach maximizes income, improves nutrition, builds climate resilience, and promotes environmental sustainability.
